Windows 11: What's different

Windows 11: What's different

Earlier this fall, we announced the upcoming systems upgrade to Windows 11 – the latest operating system from Microsoft. This upgrade will enhance our system performance, security, and overall user experience.

The Nexus-wide upgrade started on January 2, 2025.

If you have questions about the rollout that you would like to ask someone face to face about, please join one of our Windows 11 Command Center meetings.

These will be held weekly during the month of January. Starting Wednesday Jan 8th we will have representatives available from 12PM-1PM CST ready to answer your questions in real time.

On Wednesdays in January, from 12PM to 1PM CST, you can join with the link below:

Computers will be upgraded in groups so only a small percentage of employees will be impacted at a time. When the time comes to upgrade your device, you will be prompted via email to begin the upgrade and restart your computer. You do not need to worry about moving files. The only preparation required is:

  1. 1. Complete the Relias Windows 11 training if you haven’t already done so.

  1. 2. If you use Chrome for your web browser, you will need to Import Favorites to Edge. Chrome and Internet Explorer will not be supported with Windows 11.

To continually support you in this transition, we will offer training to familiarize you with the new features. The Nexus Service Desk support team will also be available to answer any IT questions or issues. Contact us by:

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we make this transition. Thank you for your attention to this important update.

Common things that have changed:

  1.  Windows Start button is now towards the middle, although still in the bottom-left area. Click it or magnifier symbol  then start typing to search for files, apps, or help
  2. Files - if folder not seen at bottom taskbar click: 1)  Windows Start button, 2) right-click  File Explorer, 3) Pin to taskbar:

  3. Wi-Fi: click speaker in bottom-right, click arrow next to Wi-Fi symbol , click Wi-Fi name:

    1. If you do not see VPN you may have to scroll to see it, but you can click & hold to move it up:

  4. Missing apps: click Windows Start button , click All apps:

  5. Speaker selection: click speaker in bottom-right, click button to right of bottom slider, select speaker (usually you don't select anything that says Intel, Display, GFX, or Graphics):
     then
  6. Windows Snap: hovering top-right maximize button or moving app to edge of screen causes shows a bunch of boxes/squares:
    1. This allows you to quickly size numerous apps/windows to view at the same time

  1. Weather changed from the bottom-right to the bottom-left as seen in animation above. It's called Widgets. Just like before when you hover over weather it gives to news & other info. To change how that works:
    1. Stop it from showing news/info when mouse is over it: click it, click cogwheel/gear in top-right, uncheck 'Open Widgets board on hover'
    2. Hide weather/widgets: click search in bottom bar, type taskbar, click taskbar settings, uncheck 'Widgets'
