Create Private Channels in Teams

Create Private Channels in Teams

Create a private channel

  1. Go to a team you want to create a channel for, select More options > Add channel.

    1. Teams does not support changing an existing channel to private

  2. Type a name and description.

  3. Under Privacy, select the down arrow and choose Private - Accessible only to a specific group of people within the team.

  4. Select Next.

  5. Type in the names of who you'd like to invite including guests.

Note: People must already be members or guests of a team to be added to a private channel.

  6. Select Add.

People you've added will see it appear in their channel list with a lock next to the name. And to see everyone that's been added to a private channel, select the Open people pane.

The name of the private channel should make it clear that it is a private channel, so that IT support staff have a better idea what staff are talking about if they ask about it in the future.
Please add "-Private" to the end of the Private channel name.

Once the channel is created, please select a second owner for the channel.

This way, they will be able to add members to the private channel while you are on PTO.

(IT can't add members to a private channel.)
