Teams error message: 'Something went wrong' preventing files from opening or other issues

Sometimes, for various underlying reasons, Microsoft Teams may display the error message or very similar error message and you may have trouble opening various files or channels within Teams.

We can often resolve this by resetting the application data using the following steps:

Clear Microsoft Teams app data

  1. If you are experiencing issues with loading documents or continued Microsoft Team quality issues, it can help to reset the Microsoft Teams app. This will clear the app's cache and data, essentially resetting it to its default state. A new copy of your data will be downloaded, no chats, meetings, documents or recordings will be lost.
    Info

When you reset the Teams app, the app data will be deleted. This includes any personalization settings that you might have configured.

    Steps:
    1. Open Windows Settings

    2. Go to Apps > Installed apps
    3. Find Microsoft Teams
    4. Click the three dots next to Teams and select Advanced options
    5. Scroll down to the Reset section and click Reset.
